The Holy month of Kartik comes to an end this Friday (Purnima - Full moon) and marks the end of last 5 days known as Bhishma Panchaka.
Grandfather Bhishma, a central figure in the Mahabharata, had a unique blessing from his father, King Shantanu: the boon of "Iccha Mrityu," or the ability to choose the moment of his death. This meant that Bhishma could decide when to leave his mortal body, regardless of his physical condition.
After lying on a bed of arrows on the battlefield of Kurukshetra for 58 days, enduring intense pain, Bhishma waited for the auspicious time to pass away. He had fallen on the battlefield at the hands of Arjuna, but due to his boon, he chose not to die immediately, instead waiting until the right moment to relinquish his life, the moment came when he finally met Krishna face to face and recited his famous prayer known as Bhishma Stuti.
Tonight we will recite those prayer outlined in Srimad Bhagavatam (Bhagavat Purana) allowing us all to reflect on his deep spiritual insights and Bhakti to the Lord.
For last time this year we will also sing Damodarastakam together and offer a candle lamp to Lord Damodara (Krishna), and as usual we will have Kirtan (chanting with musical instruments) -the most effective method of self-realisation for this age- and finish with a Veggie/Vegan Spiritual Feast.
We look forward to seeing you there!
